Conference Description
The first Gordon Conference on Organic Photochemistry was organized by Tony Trozzolo of Bell Labs (now at the University of Notre Dame) in 1964 and was held at Tilton School in New Hampshire. The program focused on topics such as the use of energy transfer to control excited state chemistry, differences in reactivity between singlet and triplet excited states and charge transfer processes, all areas of active research at the time. A second conference was held in 1965 and since then meetings have been held every second year, alternating with the IUPAC Photochemistry Symposium which was started by George Hammond in 1964. The early GRCs featured many of the pioneers of organic photochemistry as speakers, with topics reflecting the rapid evolution of organic photochemistry and photophysical techniques. During the 1970’s the Conference became more international in scope and attendance as it attracted more Europeans and Japanese and became a key venue for reporting on new developments in photochemistry.

By 2001 the scope of the conference had expanded to include a broad range of topics and the conferees voted to change the conference name to “Photochemistry” to better reflect this diversity. Since then the meeting has covered a broad range of topics including mechanistic organic and inorganic photochemistry, spectroscopy, reactive intermediates, supramolecular photochemistry and photoinduced electron transfer. Applications of the photosciences in biology, medicine, materials science and nanotechnology are also common themes.
