Conference Description
The Photosynthesis Gordon Research Conference series has its roots in the 1960's, when the mechanism of energy transformation was controversial and mitochondrial scientists had very lively and heated discussions on the topic. At the time, the Gordon Conference series on "Energy Coupling Mechanisms" was an important setting for these discussions and several photosynthesis scientists participated in them. In 1968, seeing the need for a conference setting to give photosynthesis researchers an informal discussion format, Donald Keister submitted a proposal to the Gordon Conferences for a meeting entitled "Photosynthetic Organelles". The proposal was accepted and the conference was held in 1969. Anthony San Pietro was the co-chairman. It was a successful conference and it was authorized to be continued. Photosynthesis Gordon Research Conferences have been held almost annually since, with the exception of the years in which one of the triennial International Photosynthesis Congresses is held. As photosynthesis is a particularly interdisciplinary field with major contributions from, for example, biochemistry and biophysics, the emphasis of Photosynthesis GRCs traditionally has alternated between biochemical and biophysical aspects. However, as the field continues to evolve and to draw from an increasing number of disciplines, this distinction is blurring. The Photosynthesis GRC series brings together scientists with interests in, for example, solar energy conversion, energy and electron transport, and the molecular physiology of photosynthetic organisms, and continues to be a pivotal meeting point and discussion venue for leading researchers in the field.
