Conference Description
Membrane proteins are responsible for many of the most fascinating and complex reactions characteristic of life, including energy production, sensory perception, ion transport and bioelectricity, cell adhesion and movement, cell recognition and signaling. The goal of the conference “Protons & Membrane Reactions”, since its inception in 1988, has been to bring together scientists studying the structure and function of proteins that transport protons, ions and solutes across lipid membranes, including those who utilize diverse approaches that typically do not exchange ideas. The truly interdisciplinary character of the participants in this conference make it unusually exciting and effective. Contributing disciplines include: chemistry, biophysics, structural biology, electrophysiology, protein biochemistry, photobiology, bioenergetics, theoretical /computational approaches, molecular dynamics, protein electrostatics, bioinformatics and homology modeling of membrane proteins. The 2006 meeting was a special occasion in that 2006 represents the 200th anniversary of the publication by the Finnish scientist, Grotthuss, of his theory of how the elements of water might dissociate and travel in solution to electrodes. The amazing advances in high resolution structure of membrane proteins and the powerful computational approaches to studying them, came together to create an exceptionally stimulating meeting of minds.
