Conference Description
RNA editing refers to a wide range of processes that alter the primary sequence of a transcript by nucleoside insertion, removal, or modification. The different types of editing occur in organisms ranging from microbes and invertebrates to mammals. They are mechanistically distinct, act on a wide variety of substrates, and have various biological consequences and can generate alternative mRNAs that encode proteins with different biological functions. It can generate an astonishing variety (~100 different nucleosides) and extent of RNA modifications in all types of RNAs. These processes are critical for proper development and/or function of the nervous system in mice, worms, and flies, influence many vital processes, including genetic imprinting, RNA splicing, and the efficiency or fidelity of protein synthesis, and affect infectious and non-infectious disease processes. Despite the diversity of substrates, mechanisms, and biological consequences, many of the critical theoretical and technical questions for the different types of RNA editing and modification are similar. The biannual GRC on RNA Editing is the only regularly scheduled meeting on this subject. It convenes a relatively small group of established leaders and junior scientists in a casual setting for five days of morning and evening presentations with afternoons reserved for poster sessions, informal discussions, and recreation. The GRC on RNA Editing provides scientists investigating these diverse processes with a unique opportunity to interact at a single meeting and discuss new hypotheses and mechanistic paradigms, exchange information about experimental strategies, and initiate collaborations.

A Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) is held in conjunction with this Conference. Click here for more information about the associated GRS.
