Metals in Medicine
June 29 - July 4, 2008
Proctor Academy
Andover, NH

The intersection of Inorganic Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry offers a rich scientific landscape to address current unsolved problems in clinical health care. Metals in Medicine is a field that is growing far beyond the classic “success stories” of cisplatin and Gd-MRI contrast agents. At this crossroad, there are nearly unlimited possibilities for applying the unique chemical properties of inorganic building blocks to difficult problems in all areas of health.

This meeting will focus on developing an understanding of the big picture opportunities, ongoing forefront research, and necessary approaches required to move basic scientists closer to real results in the clinic. We also expect the meeting to appeal to researchers from a wide range of backgrounds, facilitating better collaborations and partnerships among inorganic chemists, biologists, physicians, and the pharmaceutical industry.

The meeting will be organized around presenting both current clinical practices and discovery-level research in seven medicinally relevant areas (Oncology, Diagnostics, Infectious Diseases, Neurodegenerative Disease, Cardiovascular Disease, Metabolic Diseases, and Aging). Speakers and poster presenters are encouraged to present the most pressing biological problems, best strategies, key criteria involved in design, and appropriate research networks required to address the special issues associated with problems in medicinal bioinorganic chemistry.
