Mechanical Quantum Systems: From Fundamental Physics to Real World Applications

The 2016 Gordon Research Conference in Mechanical Systems in the Quantum Regime seeks to bring together scientists and engineers across a broad spectrum of fields to discuss ongoing fundamental research and application of mechanical systems exhibiting uniquely quantum phenomena. The study of mesoscopic mechanical systems in the quantum regime has evolved tremendously over the last decade, where it is now possible to utilize a variety of cooling techniques to prepare and measure mechanical objects in their quantum ground-state, to monitor their quantum vacuum fluctuations, and to create non-classical states of their motion. Looking beyond the quantum ground-state, the 2016 Conference will explore the application of mechanical quantum objects for quantum information processing, quantum metrology and precision measurement, and in the study of quantum physics from the Planck-scale to the macro-scale. Materials and device research will also be a focus of the Conference, including topics such as low dimensional materials, superconducting electro-mechanics, superfluids, levitated nanoparticles, and ultra-cold atoms.
