Nanostructures in Information Technology, Energy Conversion, and Nanoelectromechanical Systems

The 2014 Gordon Research Conference on Nanostructure Fabrication will assemble a community of scientists inspired by the challenges of designing and building devices and materials at the nanometer length scale. Nanofabrication has been the engine driving progress in the information technology industry for more than 50 years, with ever more difficult technology challenges motivating increasingly creative innovations. At the same time, precise fabrication of nanometer-scale structures has underpinned exciting discoveries across a broad range of scientific disciplines. This year’s conference will focus on the fabrication and use of nanostructures in areas such as energy conversion and storage; magnetics; optoelectronics; quantum computation; nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS); as well as semiconductor electronics. Presentations on state-of-the-art lithography, self-assembly, and chemical synthesis approaches to nanostructure formation will highlight the interdisciplinary nature of this exciting field. Morning and evening sessions will feature oral presentations and full discussions of recent results from scientists working at the forefront of their disciplines, emphasizing the role of nanostructures in their research. Poster sessions throughout the entire week will provide a broad forum for scientists, including graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, to present their work. In keeping with meeting tradition, a small number of posters will be selected for brief oral presentations during a session late in the week. The conference schedule provides an ideal environment for all participants to interact throughout the week at meals, coffee breaks, poster sessions, and social hours. The meeting atmosphere is informal and highly collegial, as this community appreciates the intrinsic beauty of well-made nanostructures and the discoveries they make possible.
