Transcending Time and Length Scales to Realize New Phenomena/Applications

The philosophy of this meeting not only captures the recent revolution of down-scaling from micro to nano phenomena, but also broadens in scope by probing new physical behavior of these complex materials including di-electric/electric/electromagnetic phenomena, optical phenomena, and diffusion phenomena. The invited presentations reflect emerging principals and concepts that evolve from classical composite materials concepts to identify and establish new disciplines and enable new technologies. Within this context, a broad range of subjects including micro/nano phenomena, physics and mechanics of interfaces, and observing, measuring, modeling, and predicting phenomena at various length scales, are all discussed. Emphasis will also be placed on new and innovative processing, fabrication, and design of nano-materials and devices. Materials enabling technologies that will be probed include biological applications, shape memory alloys, self-healing materials, and fuel cell technologies. The speakers on these topics represent some of the top researchers in their respective fields from academia, national government labs, and industry. Particular emphasis will be placed on enabling technologies and new phenomena and the challenges associated with converting them into composite products of the 21st century and beyond.
