The Decoding Microproteins Across Evolution and Disease GRC is a premier, international scientific conference focused on advancing the frontiers of science through the presentation of cutting-edge and unpublished research, prioritizing time for discussion after each talk and fostering informal interactions among scientists of all career stages. The conference program includes an array of speakers and discussion leaders from institutions and organizations worldwide, concentrating on the latest developments in the field. The conference is five days long and held in a remote location to increase the sense of camaraderie and create scientific communities, with lasting collaborations and friendships. In addition to premier talks, the conference has designated time for poster sessions from individuals of all career stages, and afternoon free time and communal meals allow for informal networking opportunities with leaders in the field.
Recent technological advances in the characterisation of RNA translation have revealed the pervasive existence of translated regions (translons) outside of currently annotated protein-coding regions, highlighting the omnipresence of a long-underappreciated biological phenomenon. The products of many translons have been found to play important biological roles as microproteins and peptideins, while many others have been identified as key regulators of gene expression through their effects on translation and mRNA stability. Nevertheless, the functions of the majority of newly identified translons and their products remain to be elucidated, and their global biological significance is still poorly understood.
This meeting will bring together researchers from around the world, spanning a wide range of expertise, who share a keen interest in closing the gap in our understanding of this rapidly evolving field. Sessions will cover topics including the detection of translons and their products, their evolution across the tree of life and within human populations, the regulation of translation, and the role of novel translons and their products in health and disease — including therapeutic applications. The meeting will not be limited to human biology, but will encompass a broad range of biological systems, including unicellular organisms, viruses, and synthetic living systems. Special focus will be given to technological developments in the field, such as innovations in ribosome profiling, proteomics, and genomic data analysis.
Participants will be encouraged to present unpublished work and to explore opportunities for collaboration.
