The Lignin GRC is a premier, international scientific conference focused on advancing the frontiers of science through the presentation of cutting-edge and unpublished research, prioritizing time for discussion after each talk and fostering informal interactions among scientists of all career stages. The conference program includes an array of speakers and discussion leaders from institutions and organizations worldwide, concentrating on the latest developments in the field. The conference is five days long and held in a remote location to increase the sense of camaraderie and create scientific communities, with lasting collaborations and friendships. In addition to premier talks, the conference has designated time for poster sessions from individuals of all career stages, and afternoon free time and communal meals allow for informal networking opportunities with leaders in the field.
Lignin is a complex, heterogeneous aromatic polymer found in the cell walls of terrestrial plants. It plays a key role in providing essential mechanical strength, water conductivity, and resistance to various biotic and abiotic stresses in plant cell walls. As the most abundant aromatic biopolymer on Earth, lignin is produced as a byproduct of chemical pulping and biorefineries, with great potential to substitute petroleum-based raw materials in various commodity products. However, its heterogeneous and recalcitrant nature presents substantial technical challenges. A deeper understanding of its in planta structure, along with the development of tailored extraction and modification methods, is crucial for creating lignin suitable as a drop-in solution for specific applications.
The goal of the Lignin Gordon Research Conference (GRC) is to bring together researchers from academia, government, research institutes, and industry who work on all aspects of lignin, including characterization, in planta engineering, modification, depolymerization, and valorization. Collaboration among plant biologists, microbiologists, chemists, engineers, materials scientists, and industry professionals is vital for advancing the applications of this abundant yet challenging renewable resource.
The 2026 Lignin GRC will uphold its tradition of innovative academic sessions while prominently featuring industry panels aimed at bridging the gap between research and commercial implementation. These sessions will facilitate the essential dialogue needed to transform lignin-derived innovations into viable commercial products.
A limited number of speakers will be selected from the submitted abstracts. Early career researchers and those seeking new opportunities (e.g., job seekers) are particularly encouraged to apply. If you wish to give a short oral presentation, please indicate this in the “Activities” section of your submission.
