Beyond Standard Optomechanics: Exploring New Mechanical Interactions

The Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) on Mechanical Systems in the Quantum Regime is a unique forum for graduate students, post-docs, and other scientists with comparable levels of experience and education to present and exchange new data and cutting edge ideas. In this protected "off-record" environment, participants are encouraged to freely discuss on-going projects and unpublished data for problem solving and also to develop new collaborations and inspire scientific creativity.

Recent progresses in the design, fabrication and control of mechanical systems have paved the way to explore new horizons in the quantum world. Besides the testing and verification of quantum mechanical principles and ideas, mechanical systems play an important role in today's classical technology as well as in future's quantum applications. For instance, one of the most striking characteristics of mechanical systems is their ability to mediate communication between different subsystems. This property makes them a promising candidate as quantum transducers used in quantum information processing. This seminar will give an overview over the recent developments in the field and will cover theoretical and experimental topics, explore future perspectives and establish connections among related fields as cavity quantum electrodynamics, nanophononics and optomechanics.

The GRS offers the opportunity for young scientists to present their work to their peers not only in form of posters but also in form of oral presentations. We plan to have a diverse meeting; thus, we strongly encourage people from underrepresented groups and related fields of research to apply and to submit an abstract for an oral presentation.
