At the Cutting Edge of Understanding Protein Fates in Health and Diseases

The Gordon Research Seminar on Protein Processing, Trafficking and Secretion is a unique forum for graduate students, post-docs, and other scientists with comparable levels of experience and education to present, grow their professional network and exchange new data and cutting edge ideas in the field with their peers.

This meeting will focus on the multiple molecular mechanisms affecting protein sorting as well as post-translational modifications taking place along the secretory pathways from the nascent polypeptides to their terminating degradation, including their shuttling in intracellular compartments. Together with their physiological roles, these events will also be addressed on the pathological point of view since the deregulation of protein processing, folding and aggregation are also at the basis of diseases (e.g. Alzheimer's; hypercholesterolemia; neoplasia; viral and bacterial infections; and many others).

We emphasize two important training features of the Program. First, in her keynote lecture, Dr. Klaudia Brix will aim at unifying the various fields represented in the audience around the GRS central question: "Understanding Protein Fates in Health and Diseases". Second, the 2016 GRS will include a completely novel session entitled "Cutting Edge Methodologies in the Study of Protein Processing, Trafficking and Secretion" featuring two technology-oriented discussions. This session aims at training the attendees in the use of recently developed and impactful methods in the field to study questions relevant to their on-going research in novel ways.
