Conference Description
The Silk Proteins and the Transition to Biotechnologies GRC is a premier, international scientific conference focused on advancing the frontiers of science through the presentation of cutting-edge and unpublished research, prioritizing time for discussion after each talk and fostering informal interactions among scientists of all career stages. The conference program includes an array of speakers and discussion leaders from institutions and organizations worldwide, concentrating on the latest developments in the field. The conference is five days long and held in a remote location to increase the sense of camaraderie and create scientific communities, with lasting collaborations and friendships. In addition to premier talks, the conference has designated time for poster sessions from individuals of all career stages, and afternoon free time and communal meals allow for informal networking opportunities with leaders in the field.
Silk proteins are among nature’s most sophisticated biomaterials, evolved across diverse invertebrates for functions ranging from protection and prey capture to locomotion. Renowned for their remarkable mechanical performance, biocompatibility and versatility, silks rival leading synthetic materials while offering unique opportunities for sustainable, protein-based technologies. Despite their diversity, silk systems share fundamental principles, including the ability to store proteins at extremely high concentrations and rapidly convert them into fibers or adhesive materials, yet many underlying molecular mechanisms remain unresolved.
The 2027 Silk Proteins and the Transition to Biotechnologies GRC will bring together researchers from academia, government, and industry to explore silk biology and biotechnology from genetics and protein assembly to cutting-edge applications in human health and materials science. By fostering cross-disciplinary dialogue across organismal systems and application domains, the meeting will accelerate innovation at the interface of fundamental silk science and next-generation biotechnologies.
The conference chair is currently developing their preliminary program, which will include 9 sessions and the names of the invited speakers and discussion leaders for each of these sessions. The preliminary program will be available by September 30, 2026. Please check back for updates.
