Conference Description
The Solid State Studies in Ceramics GRC is a premier, international scientific conference focused on advancing the frontiers of science through the presentation of cutting-edge and unpublished research, prioritizing time for discussion after each talk and fostering informal interactions among scientists of all career stages. The conference program includes an array of speakers and discussion leaders from institutions and organizations worldwide, concentrating on the latest developments in the field. The conference is five days long and held in a remote location to increase the sense of camaraderie and create scientific communities, with lasting collaborations and friendships. In addition to premier talks, the conference has designated time for poster sessions from individuals of all career stages, and afternoon free time and communal meals allow for informal networking opportunities with leaders in the field.
Since its inception in 1954, this conference has served as a cornerstone for advancing our fundamental understanding of ceramics and their transformative applications. The 2026 edition will focus on Defect Control and Functionality in Ceramics, spotlighting how substitutional alloying and lattice defects can be harnessed to unlock enhanced material properties and new functionalities for energy conversion, computation, and extreme environments. Sessions will feature cutting-edge, unpublished research in areas such as: predictive defect chemistry, high-entropy ceramics, photo-ionics, solid-state electrochemical interfaces and transport, autonomous experimentation and sustainable ceramics. Renowned international experts will present advances in computational materials design, fundamental thermodynamic and kinetic measurements, and innovative processing techniques. Each talk is followed by in-depth discussions, fostering critical dialogue and idea exchange.
Complementing the main conference, the Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) offers a dedicated platform for graduate students and postdocs to present their work, build professional networks, and participate in career development sessions. Participation in the GRS, scheduled immediately prior to the GRC, prepares early career researchers for active engagement in the larger GRC.
The conference will consist of nine sessions, on the topics listed below. The conference chair is currently developing their preliminary program, which will include the names of the invited speakers and discussion leaders for each of these sessions. The preliminary program will be available by September 10, 2025. Please check back for updates.
