The Tribology GRC is a premier, international scientific conference focused on advancing the frontiers of science through the presentation of cutting-edge and unpublished research, prioritizing time for discussion after each talk and fostering informal interactions among scientists of all career stages. The conference program includes an array of speakers and discussion leaders from institutions and organizations worldwide, concentrating on the latest developments in the field. The conference is five days long and held in a remote location to increase the sense of camaraderie and create scientific communities, with lasting collaborations and friendships. In addition to premier talks, the conference has designated time for poster sessions from individuals of all career stages, and afternoon free time and communal meals allow for informal networking opportunities with leaders in the field.
Tribology is the science and technology of friction, adhesion, lubrication, and wear. It encompasses the structural, physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms at sliding interfaces across multiple length scales. While historically centered on improving lubrication and wear resistance in steam engines, gears, and bearings, tribology has evolved into a truly interdisciplinary field. Today, tribology remains crucial for—but is no longer limited to—classical mechanical systems. It also plays a critical role in nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, geophysics, food science, cosmetics, health, space exploration, and other emerging areas yet to be discovered. Innovations in tribology are driving advancements in diverse fields, from biological or biomimetics systems, lithography, electronics, additive manufacturing, sustainable engineering and extreme environments.
The 2026 Gordon Research Conference on Tribology invites scientists and engineers from all disciplines to engage in discussions and debates on cutting-edge research questions. This conference will also address tribological challenges beyond traditional fields, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration to identify new scientific questions and technological applications. In the tradition of this conference, we expect a lively and productive exchange of results and ideas in an informal atmosphere that welcomes a richly diverse audience. The meeting will include invited talks on late-breaking results by leading researchers and will offer extended discussions around contributed posters.
The 2026 GRC on Tribology will be preceded by a Gordon Research Seminar, giving young tribologists the opportunity to present their work to their peers in an unintimidating atmosphere, prepare themselves in tutorial lectures for the GRC, and build networks with colleagues. We expect lively, informative discussions for the emerging generation of tribologists.
