Conference Description
The Mesophotic Coral Reef Ecosystems GRS provides a unique forum for young doctoral and post-doctoral researchers to present their work, discuss new methods, cutting edge ideas, and pre-published data, as well as to build collaborative relationships with their peers. Experienced mentors and trainee moderators will facilitate active participation in scientific discussion to allow all attendees to be engaged participants rather than spectators.
This forum will focus on leveraging data in data-limited mesophotic environments. Mesophotic coral reef ecosystems comprise a significant portion of total coral reef area but are relatively understudied. As these reefs are typically found between depths of 30 – 150m they are structured by factors such as light and bathymetry. Despite growing interest, sampling and exploration of these reefs remains difficult. Accessing the necessary depths for study poses a significant barrier to research. As this environment is still data-limited, the training of new researchers in both technical diving and rigorous methodologies is critical. This also highlights the need for strong collaborative work.
The first GRS on Mesophotic Coral Reef Ecosystems will bring together graduate students and early career scientists to present and discuss the cutting-edge methods we are using. We aim to help researchers expand their networks, adding new skillsets into scientific pipelines. This will help maximize the science which can be performed from limited opportunities in the field. We encourage applications for talks on any topic with a focus on mesophotic coral reef ecosystems.
Application Instructions
The seminar will feature approximately 10 talks and 2 poster sessions. All attendees are expected to actively participate in the GRS, either by giving an oral presentation or presenting a poster. Therefore, all applications must include an abstract.
The seminar chair will select speakers from abstracts submitted by August 22, 2022. Those applicants who are not chosen for talks and those who apply after the deadline to be considered for an oral presentation will be expected to present a poster. In order to participate, you must submit an application by the date indicated in the Application Information section above.
Program Format
Gordon Research Seminars are 2-day meetings which take place on the Saturday and Sunday just prior to the start of the associated GRC. The GRS opens with a 1-hour introductory session on Saturday afternoon, followed by a poster session, dinner and a 2-hour session in the evening. Sunday morning begins with breakfast and is followed by another 2-hour session, a second poster session, and lunch. A final 1-hour session takes place just after lunch, and the associated GRC begins later that evening.
An outline of the program components for this GRS is displayed below. The seminar chair is currently developing their detailed program schedule, which will include the speakers they select from submitted abstracts, in addition to any additional components outlined below. The detailed program will be available by October 21, 2022. Please check back for updates.
