Conference Description

The main goal of the Gordon Research Conference on Carbohydrates is to bring together a diverse group of scientists who work in the broad area of glycoscience (carbohydrate chemistry, carbohydrate biochemistry, and glycobiology). Compared to other meetings in the glycoscience area, the Gordon Research Conference on Carbohydrates differs in that it does not focus on a singe class of glycoconjugate nor even a single area of the broader field. Instead, this meeting serves as a forum for the presentation and critical discussion of the newest ideas and emerging concepts in the entire glycoscience area, with a focus on the molecular aspects of the broad range of carbohydrate-containing compounds. This meeting has a long history (established in 1961) and a key to its success has been its ability to evolve with the field. In the early years of the meeting, the focus was on synthetic chemistry and over time it has broadened to emphasize, in addition to synthesis, new technology and the development of a molecular-level understanding of the biological role of carbohydrates using multidisciplinary approaches. Indeed, a critical emphasis of recent meetings has been the integration of the three previously mentioned areas that comprise glycoscience. The meeting has always attracted participants with diverse scientific backgrounds including synthetic chemists, biological chemists, medicinal chemists, molecular modelers, enzymologists, structural biologists and biochemists. Of perhaps even more importance, this conference has consistently provided a forum for students, junior faculty and those new to the area to integrate themselves into the glycoscience community. This, in turn has fostered their development as independent scientists.

What is a GRC? Gordon Research Conferences (GRC) are 5-day meetings that bring scientists together from around the world to present and discuss unpublished research with other leaders in their field.

Related Conference

This Gordon Research Conference (GRC) series is related to the "Carbohydrates" Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) series. Although a related GRS will typically be scheduled in conjunction with its parent GRC each time it meets, that may not always be the case. Refer to the individual meetings in the Meeting History section below for more details. For more information about the associated Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) series, click here.

What is a GRS? Gordon Research Seminars (GRS) are 2-day meetings that bring graduate students and post-docs together to discuss their cutting edge research among peers and mentors. Each GRS immediately precedes an associated Gordon Research Conference (GRC), and topics addressed at the GRS relate closely to the GRC.
